Time to show compassion towards COVID patients

-Dr. Harleen Kaur

Whenever you find a Person Infected with Covid 19 in  your neighborhood or workplace being taken to Quarantine/Isolation Centre/hospital in an Ambulance. Don’t panic and embarrass the person, instead give thumbs up for a speedy recovery; because the way the virus is spreading, soon we will find an Ambulance, in front of everybody’s gate / door.  To kill the virus which is killing our loved ones, we need to do all together supporting the frontline workers like doctors, nurses and behind the scene heroes like civic maintenance people.  Above all, we should treat patient with empathy and compassion. Let’s understand how this person must be going through.  We need to understand that person is not a criminal he is just unwell. He will get cured in few days but the memory of how  we  treated him will stay with him forever.

Only in last few months, we’ve not only managed to manifest hate towards china and Chinese products because this is a Chinese virus but we have also progressed  to persecute anyone who got infected with covid 19 and show hatred towards the people from northeast . This was recently experienced by an Indian idol fame actor Meiyang chang when two guys on a speeding bike called him corona. I mean how hurtful these comments can be for a person.  In recent past we have evicted doctors and nurses from their rented homes. Ironic is that we belong to the country which believes in atithi devo bhava. Can we believe that we can do these kind of inhumane things to people who are the frontline warriors of the pandemic and who are the actual heroes in today’s time. So I guess we need to start helping those in need rather than ostracizing.

As it is unlikely that things will go back to the normal for the foreseeable future, compassion and solidarity will be essential for creating new ways to provide Covid positive. For end of life the range of our capabilities has become restricted but with a little effort and lot of heart we can still perform the small acts of kindness that we already know make a big difference. So let’s all fight corona together. Let’s shower compassion and spread love. So, I wish to god that: “This corona pandemic gets eradicated fast and   pandemic of love spreads like a wild fire now.”
